When it comes to accessing those office resources from anywhere, 75 percent said they value work-anywhere-anytime flexibility and nearly 60 percent stated it makes them more productive. Correspondingly, the survey found that IT organizations are struggling to meet the needs and expectations of employees working remotely due to outdated, under-performing network hardware and the rise in extreme weather-related disruptions.

The survey reveals that the average desk job has moved beyond the office cubicle and, as a result, connectivity isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. Three-quarters (75 percent) of Americans rely on remote access to office files and applications to give them flexibility in when and where they work. And it’s not just the employees who win, businesses benefit by keeping employees more productive and their data more secure: 6 in 10 U.S. adults said that VPN or remote access to the office makes them more productive and 57 percent use remote access to avoid having to download files to their PC or using Dropbox or similar cloud file-sharing services.

The increasing reliance on remote network access is resulting in discontent with current Virtual Private Network (VPN) and remote access technologies from IT support staff and employees alike. More than three-quarters (77 percent) of Americans are less than satisfied with their current capabilities offered by their IT organization. Of the issues cited, performance (58 percent), connection reliability (43 percent), and ease of use (31 percent) where the top areas for improvement, and 30 percent don’t even have an option to work remotely due primarily to cost and security risks. In response, employees are going to the phones to voice their concerns. Sixty-five percent surveyed submit at least one trouble ticket per month to IT support for VPN and remote access-related issues, and 25 percent submit three or more trouble tickets per month.

The recent Polar Vortex and “storms of the century” across the U.S. have underscored the impact of extreme weather on business productivity and profits. The survey found that 66 percent of employees were affected by extreme weather – from being stranded somewhere without remote access to office files and applications (50 percent) to the office being shut down and IT systems being offline altogether (27 percent). Recent storms also seemed to have caught some IT organizations flat-footed – 21 percent of stranded employees requested remote access, but IT could not provide it in time.
