Pertino Utilizes Its 'Kiwi Connection' to Help With the Silicon Valley Talent Shortage
Los Gatos, Calif. – March 20, 2014 – Pertino, a company reinventing networking for the cloud era, is taking a unique approach to the Silicon Valley talent shortage by recruiting university interns from New Zealand, an emerging technology hub. Craig Elliott, CEO and co-founder of Pertino, started the program, dubbed InterNZ, last fall when Pertino was looking to build on the momentum of its U.S. summer internship program. Since the New Zealand summer is December through February, tapping tech-rich Kiwi universities for a winter group of “summer” interns was the perfect solution to getting a steady supply of eager and capable software development talent.
“Our first engineering summer intern program was a great success but we still had a lot of work to get done when the program ended, so I found another summer by going to New Zealand,” said Craig Elliott, co-founder and CEO of Pertino. “I know firsthand how innovative and well-educated Kiwis are, so it was a logical place for me to turn to find new university student interns for Pertino.”
In today’s hyper-competitive Silicon Valley technology industry, engineering talent is in short supply, even for the hottest of startups. Companies are constantly trying innovative approaches and looking in new places to attract the best and brightest. Pertino’s InterNZ program is a great example of tapping into far-away islands of talent.
For Kiwi computer and engineering students, the Pertino InterNZ program is more than just relevant work experience. Elliott designed the program to be a behind the scenes look at the making of a Silicon Valley startup, including “Ask-the-CEO” lunches, board meeting reenactments, and executive-led discussions about go-to-market, product, and funding strategies. Pertino also provides help in securing J1 visas and social security numbers, and coordinated lodging, transportation and social events.
“We came here not knowing any marketing aspects of the business or what a venture capitalist and angel investor was,” said Micah Cinco. “Craig and the team were great mentors and showed us how each part of the business interacts. We not only learned about the tech industry, we got inspired about our own startup someday – a scary thought before this venture.”
Based on the success of its InterNZ program class of 2014, which wrapped-up at the end of February, Pertino is already planning for next winter’s summer interns. The company is also working with the Kiwi Landing Pad, an organization co-founded by Elliott to help high growth New Zealand technology companies establish a U.S. presence, to expand the program to other Silicon Valley tech companies.
Home to companies such as Vend and Xero, New Zealand boasts an impressive lineup of innovative tech companies that are fueling its burgeoning tech sector and influencing a new generation of entrepreneurs. Elliott is no stranger to the Kiwi tech community. In addition to being a board member at Kiwi Landing Pad, he’s also a member of the board of directors at Xero and serves as a strategic advisor to the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.

Founded in 2011, Pertino is reinventing networking for the cloud era, and in the process, providing a catalyst for democratizing IT for small-to-medium businesses. Globalization, cloud-enabled IT, and growing demand for always-connected people, devices, and things is affecting businesses of all sizes – making the “outside network” as critical as the inside one. However, traditional VPN networks have not kept pace. Pertino’s revolutionary Cloud Network Engine enables any business to build a simple and secure cloud-based network that connects people to IT resources from anywhere on the planet. No hardware. No networking knowledge. No upfront investment. To achieve this breakthrough, Pertino has developed a software platform that combines the power and pervasiveness of the cloud with Software-defined Networking (SDN), network and service virtualization technology and cloud-based management. The company is venture funded and headquartered in Los Gatos, Calif. For more information or to try Pertino for yourself, please visit pertino.com.
